Bright Star School
and Orphanage

Updates of former students

Peris
Peris lost both parents and was found living on the streets of Nairobi.  Unable to succeed in the classroom at Bright Star, we paid for her training at a tailoring school and she was living with distant relatives.  She dropped out of tailoring school when she become pregnant.   Peris recently gave birth to a baby boy so plans for her future have to wait a while.

Eric Teya did not pass the National Exam and chose not to repeat Class 8 but instead work as a bus conductor on a matatu.  We will continue to follow him and help him when needed.

Phoebe
Phoebe
lost her parents many years ago and was one of the first girls to live in our girls' dormitory.  She finished hair styling training school and is now living with distant relatives.  She was given her sponsor savings and the money necessary to buy hairstyling tools to help her become self-supporting.

Anne I. came to Bright Star in the fall of '08 but was soon discovered to be pregnant.  The director found distant relatives of Anne's who were willing to take her into their home and help care for her and the baby.  With communication difficult, no update on Anne is known.

Kennedy
Kennedy
(21) has no parents.  He lived with an older brother in the slum until this brother, a thief, was beaten to death by the police after a robbery.  Kennedy lived with us until he turned 18 at which time George and Anndora Laflin provided funds for Kennedy to build a place of his own.  He finished driving/ auto mechanics school but could not find a job.  The Laflin's then provided money for Kennedy to start a business selling cereals, rice, beans, and charcoal as well as shoelaces donated by Steve Currens.  His story can be found by clicking here.

Onesmus
Onesmus
(21) lost his father when he was 5 years old and the whereabouts of his mother is unknown.  Onesmus has completed driving/auto mechanics training thanks to the generosity of Kim and Mary B. Frey, his sponsors.  He is struggling to pay school fees for his younger sister Judy that he takes care of.  He received a loan through our micro-finance program to help give him a jump start.
