Mary Grace is
sick with TB
Feb. 9th update
Feb. 12 -
Charlo found to have TB
March 1st update

This
e-mail was received Jan. 30th from our dorm mother about Mary Grace:
"First and foremost, all is not well with Mary
Grace. She fell sick in the night and started coughing persistantly. She was coughing and vomiting blood full of blood
clots and some other black substances. The girls woke me up at
around 2 am and I had to wake up Mr. Wekesa Felix and Mr. Barasa.
We called pastor on phone who woke up and gave us instructions to
call a mobile number of one of the tax drivers from within. We
rushed her to Mbagathi District hospital in which she did not
receive any medication because we had no money at that time.
Pastor came very early in the morning and has given out money for
her treatment. She is hospitalised at the moment. Doctors say she
has TB that has never been healed and ulcers. Chest X-rays and
stomach X-rays will be able to show the extend of the damage. She
seriously needs your prayers.
As she vomited on the floor in the night, it was so pathetic that
her fellow girls refused to clean up the mess because they feared
that TB is contagious. Honestly, no teacher was willing to clean
up the mess which made the school director and Madam Jacklyne to
wear gloves and put on masks to clean up the mess. What a shame to
us!!! Pastor had to send away all the girls and both started
cleaning the dormitory."
The school
director
sent the following e-mail Feb. 9:
"Mary Grace has been hospitalised for a week as from Yesterday .She
was found to be having both T.B and pneumonia."

Note: one of our faithful
supporters provided the funds to pay the medical care
for Mary Grace. Through private donations, Don, Louise, and
Miriam Thomas, and the Shiloh U.M.C., each of the remaining orphans
will be tested for TB.

I received a call from the
hospital and was able to talk to Mary Grace. She sounded strong.
The doctors said she would remain in the hospital for at least five
more days. Then they would re-evaluate her.
The school director
sent the following e-mail Feb. 12:
"Mary Grace has been discharged this evening. Her total cost for
the treatment of the TB and pneumonia has come to ksh 88,650. The
charges per bed has been ksh 1,800 per day. Her chest had rotten
so bad according to the X-rays and other tests that were done. She
has been given drugs that will last for 8 months and she has to
take them on daily basis without missing even once. She will be
having appointments once per month for the next 8 months. The
doctor requires that Mary Grace takes two packets of milk every
day, one in the morning and the other one in the evening for the
next two months. Each packet of milk is ksh 35.She also has been
recommended to eat fruits in plenty every week. We have given Mary
Grace one of the houses in the back. Am able to see the drastic
physical improvement that Mary Grace has. On behalf of Mary Grace,
I say thank you so much Bill for the money and to all who offered
prayers for Mary Grace. I also have taken the girls and some boys
for the TB tests and found that one of our boys Charlo has TB.
There was a general observation that some of the boarders were
developing breathing complications. The tests for all the boarders
that had breathing complications costs ksh 45,600. The doctor
tested 48 boarders only and then I ran out of the money."

In '06 Pastor John found
Charlo in the slum begging for food. His parents had
died and he was homeless so he was brought to Bright Star.
Since he'd missed so much school, he had to repeat 8th grade.
He is very bright and is successful in his classes.
Charlo is polite and soft-spoken. His parents would be
proud of him.
When I visited the school later that year, Charlo told me his
chest hurt so I took him to the clinic in the slum. He
was given antibiotics and cough meds. Now I suspect he
was suffering from TB then.
Charlo's sponsors are
graciously paying for his medical care.

The
director sent the following e-mail March 1:
"Mary Grace is doing very well. She has even added weight and she
is getting strong and stronger day after day. Charlo is on
medication although I haven't seen a big improvement which am hoping
that will happen as time goes by. Catherine is also on drugs and the
swelling in your legs is reducing gradually."

Catherine has had a tough
last few months with malaria and swelling of her legs.
She's now showing signs of improvement and can get back to
enjoying her life at Bright Star.
Her sponsors are helping
to pay for her medical care. |
