Photos of the Week

The voting is finished for the American Express Members Project.  The committee will now choose the Top 25 projects.  Thank you all who went to the hassle of voting for Bright Star.  We didn't get many votes but, who knows, we just might get chosen on our merit

Lisa Fipps wrote a fantastic article in The Kokomo Perspective about Bright Star.  Check it out.

Thank you, Altrusa, for the 8 gross of pencils.  It's difficult to do school work without a pencil so the kids will appreciate your generosity.

Dental needs of the children were apparent during our visit in June.  Can you help?

Update on Gladys

A day in New Haven!

Help!
I've received 17 boxes of valuable reading books from Susan Mendenhall and friends for Bright Star's library but now I need $3000 to pay the postage to get the books to the school.
Please let me know if you can help.

It didn't take long for Dan and Sherri Hockney to again "step" in to help.  They're paying for the steps to the bridge!  Thank you both so much!  Ironically, their son Dean who is working in Iraq also offered to pay for the steps.  So instead, he's paying to have shelves built in the new Science lab.  Good, good family!

What projects are we working on at the school?

Thank you, fellow Rotarians, for your generosity.  All the bags made it to Kenya!

Shiloh U.M.C. has done it again!  The children in their VBS donated 391 pairs of socks and undies for Bright Star students!  And the generous monetary donation will go a long way in buying other needed items.

We are in need of colored pencils, eraser caps, and ink pens.  Watch for some good deals when school begins and help us if you can. Thanks, Lisa.

Bill Kring donated the money to build our Science lab and 3 classrooms.  Betty Campbell's family donated the money to build the sewing center/medical clinic.  And the Anoka U.M.C. donated the money to add a bathroom to the girls' dorm. Thank you all so much!  Construction started May 5th.  Click here to see photos.

Redeemer Lutheran School, staff, and parents donated over $3000 to enlarge the girls' dormitory.  The money was given in honor of Dr. Perry Glancy, retiring principal of Redeemer School who visited Bright Star in 2007.  The concrete floor has been poured and will be ready in a few days!

Thank you, Thompson Elementary School teachers, for the bulletin board and math materials.  You were more than generous!  Thank you, Nolan, for your donation too.

Donations from Onward Christian Church Women's Fellowship and Goldsmith U.M.C. will help provide furnishings for the new expansion of the girls' dorm!

Ben Davis 9th Graders Shave Mr. Upton's Head and donate $656 for school supplies.

What will $100 buy at Bright Star?  How about $20?  You'll be amazed!
How much is needed each month?

Feeding the children supplements, like this peanut butter and bread, is essential to learning.

Western H. S. Interact Club donated 2 laptops.  Thank you all so much.  Thanks also to Daniel, Becky, Susan, and the Propes' for their laptop donations.  These will provide a huge benefit to the kids!

It is a pleasure to thank the following friends: Steve Currens for two huge donations of school supplies; the Western Middle School students for the 1800 toothbrushes; the American Cancer Society for the 200+ t-shirts; and the First Church of the Nazarene, Delta Kappa Gamma, LWML, the Peru Rotary Club, L.I.F.T., and all of you who donated socks and underwear.  The kids and I sincerely appreciate your generosity!

The boys' dorm is completed, thanks to the generosity of Lutheran Church of Our RedeemerThanks to a donation from my Rotary Club, the boys' dorm will get furnished with chairs, study tables, lamps, and flooring to make the dorm a "home."   Thank you all!

Check out the Kokomo Tribune article about the American Sewing Guild - Kokomo Chapter and Shirley Hoy making uniforms for the students. You can also read Danielle's article in the Jan. 21st edition of the Kokomo Tribune about the political unrest around Bright Star.

Thank you, Indiana State Reading Association, for the 600+ canvas bags and the huge monetary donation to buy reference books for our new library.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Knowing that I love dogs, Pastor John found two homeless puppies and brought them into Bright Star's family.  They were named Sussy and Ponch.  In May, Sussy was found to have cancer.  She spent 4 weeks at the vet's getting chemotherapy* and was returned to Bright Star healthy.  But during my visit in June, I saw her have a seizure and the vet was called.  He couldn't tell what the problem was but suggested the strength of the chemotherapy was too much for her.  On August 28th, she passed away.  She was a good dog and will be missed.

*No donations were used for Sussy's care.  All vet expenses were paid by me personally.
