Bright Star School
and Orphanage

Update:  in October, thieves broke into the school compound, tied up the night watchman, broke the padlock on the computer lab door, and stole most of the computers, damaging some of the tables too.  It was a scary night for the boarders but no one was injured.  The police say they're still looking for the thieves and the computers.  A more secure door has been purchased.  AIESEC are considering whether or not to reinvest their time and money into our computer lab.

Computer Lab and Dedication
May 2009

Bright Star's new computer lab was funded by AIESEC, an organization that works through the University of Nairobi "to help students discover and develop their potential so as to have a positive influence on society."  One of their volunteers, Patricia, came to Bright Star to teach computer skills.  When she saw our need for a computer lab, she convinced the organization to donate 20 desktop computers, desks, chairs, and Internet access for one year through a dish.  Our library became the computer lab.  The walls were "smoothed" and painted, linoleum was laid, and the ceiling covered with plastic to keep the Kenyan dust out.  Some of our artistic students drew murals on the walls.  The total cost of this project was donated by AIESEC.

Thank you, AIESEC!

Computers, Internet dish, and furniture were donated by AIESEC.

The dedication of the lab was attended by many officials.

Students were very interested, bored but interested.

Some students sang at the dedication.

Nelson read a poem he had written.

The Area Chief spoke also.

The lab is now open!

This mural was drawn by our student, Fredrick Tongi.
